Visiting Dien Bien


Dien Bien is a province located in the northwest of Vietnam, about 480 kilometers from Hanoi. It is a well-known tourist destination in the region for its history and beauty.


The province is the home of the famous victorious battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

Dien Bien is most appealing during the second month of the lunar year (around March and April). At this time, Ban (Bauhinia variegata) flowers color the forests in a bed of white. In addition, minority ethnic communities are one of Dien Bien’s most popular attractions. Visitors can see typical highland stilt houses and observe the daily activities of the H’Mong and Thai people.

However, the number of visitors travel to Dien Bien is always increased in May on the occasion of the Dien Bien Phu Victory celebration.

Following are some recommended places to visit in Dien Bien: Hill A1; Muong Thanh airfiled; the Command bunker of the Dien Bien Phu entrenched camp; Him Lam Hill; Doc Lap Hill; Museum of Dien Bien Phu Victory; Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument; Pa Khoang Reservoir; Tham Pua Cave.

From Hanoi to Dien Bien, visitors can go by air or by land. Vietnam Airlines has daily flights from Hanoi to Dien Bien, and vice versa, using the ATR72 aircraft with a capacity of 70 passengers. The travelling time is about one hour. (Source: TITC)
